Where to start? Imagine a traditional stone village, whose heart is the most magnifent church; around which sit the men, talking politics and drinking coffee. Picture the ladies coming and going from the shops, carrying fresh homebaked bread to the church or calling into the local tavernas with their produce…………well, this is a great start!
So much to choose from:
Peyia starts here but then expands into seeing the traditional wrapped with the more modern. Bakeries now thrive on the corner of most streets; butchers are in abundance as are the choice of eateries, from traditional tavernas to more sophisticated restaurants. We've not only got The Jail pub, which was actually the old jail and retains its stone built feel; we've now also got a very posh wine bar, The Mill, which could put many a UK city wine bar to shame.
This village is old and new, mixed together with each watching the other. The men still sit at the Kafenes drinking their coffee but are now very likely to have a tourist lady sitting near them, chatting to them and asking their opinion!
The church stands proudly in the heart of the village and is much photographed and admired by visitors – but it retains its job as the centre and life force of Peyia, drawing locals and incomers alike to find solace and give celebration for life.
Magnificent views:
Peyia itself nestles high on the hillside above Coral Bay. Few can restrain from stopping and just staring at the magnificence of the views from the church and the surrounding area; from the coastline near the Paphos lighthouse to Sea Caves, the sea is omnipresent and adds silhouette to the hustle and bustle of the Coral Bay resort. At night, these views are lit up for miles around and create a feeling akin to flying, as you sit and watch the world go by.
Celebrations:
The village is very traditional when it comes to celebrating. Easter and Christmas see the whole centre of the village lit with fairy lights which stretch the whole main road from Coral Bay to the Church centre, completed by displays appropriate to the season, which are housed in the Municipal gardens. The place feels magical! Twice yearly, locals are invited to free BBQ or night of celebration, where food and drink is provided for them by their village – and the locals invite we incomers to dine and dance!
Why Peyia?
Peyia has everything and more: village life woven into new, more modern ways, Tractors trundling up roads where Mercedes now rush to arrive at nowhere in particular! Great places to eat where local characters greet you with a smile and (very tall) story)! Food shopping the traditional and modern way. Wonderful views; excellent villas and apartments and superb value for money.
In brief, unforgettable experiences wrapped up in a growing village, whose heart welcomes everyone who cares to come and stay for a while……… and the beaches are less than 2kms away too!
