We met a lovely Cypriot couple who are breaking with tradition in some ways and bound by it in others. Sofia is from Limassol and Koullis from Peyia. They are now engaged - and living in Peyia. Normally , the man would go to the home town of the lady and live there.
Sofia tells me her "deal" is that they marry in Limassol not Peyia, which seems fair - though they'll come back here to live after the wedding.
I was saying to them how lucky they are to live on land which their direct family have had a part in cultivating/building and growing. They really do walk the talk of life, taking the family name and ways forward and growing the skills/enhancing the knowledge. I envy them that.
My home town is Hebburn, near Newcastle upon Tyne. I left there, aged 16 but it will always be a big part of me, mainly because my beloved grandparents lived there and I was born in their big bed (luckily, they weren't in it at the time!). Now, I suppose Tony and I are nomads: we feel like Peyia is home and we love Cyprus but we are still English at heart and in ways. Maybe life for some of us is about reaching out and taking our ways to others, learning the best from them and sharing the best we have.
Its a people thing - and Peyia is a great village to meet, live amongst and learn about, the best of people.
