The matter of the new post office in Peyia

Lynn - 04/10/2009

There is much discussion in the village, about the construction of a new post office for the local area. Apparently, due to be housed next door to our offices in Peyia, this post office is the "master of all" village post offices. It certainly looks huge - but thats probably because its currently empty and buildings tend to look big until stuff goes into them.
We used to have a post office in Peyia, sort of! We had Savvas, who owns and runs the main Kafenes, who used to sell stamps and very enthusiastically "lick and stick" them on our envelopes. You were only ever allowed to buy the number of stamps to put on the number of envelopes you had ie you couldn't buy a supply of stamps - and you could only call in to buy stamps if:
- Savvas was awake
- Savvas wasn't playing backgammon
- Savvas HAD some stamps - which wasn't often
- Savvas was speaking to the English - which also wasn't often
- Savvas wanted to sell them! ...

It wasn't the easiest set up in the world!
We still have a small parcels office which is open 12-1pm, Mon to Friday. Except Tuesday and Wednesday when the man goes off early to see him Grandmother. And sometimes, not Thursday coz he is busy at the "big" office in Paphos. Friday, when I called to collect a long overdue parcel, calling at 12.15pm, I was "too late" (according to Savvas), the man had gone for the day.....

We are all hopeful the "master of all" post offices will be open, have stamps and let us have parcels when they are sent for us.
But its early days........
