It was a Big Day in Peyia centre yesterday. There is a very large palm tree, which dominates the entrance to the municipal offices and proudly stands guard in the pretty, open square.
If this tree could talk, there would be many stories to tell of the changing face of our lovely village centre - but I suspect all would include that line that, "The old men sat taking their coffee in the kafenes".......
Yesterday, the old men sat taking their coffee in the kafenes but they had the added responsibility of overseeing the trimming of the branches of the palm tree. During the course of this 5 hour job, many ladders were put up then taken down; advise was sought then discared; opinions shared (all at once and loudly) and the Man With The Cutters, was stopped and started until in desperation, he just chopped the bottom branches off and stormed away. Thus began an even louder debate about what to do with the branches - which, today, are still at the base of the tree looking sadly at the trunk and wishing to be back in the living structure.
The old men are still taking coffee and the tree still stands proud, albeit with slightly less succulent branches than it started , yesterday.
The ceremony is over - for now!
