I've noticed that many of the people viewing the blogs, are thinking of coming to live here longterm, which I do recommend. We've been here just under 10 years and its a beautiful island but life here is exactly the same as anywhere else: you've to pay your way and find work - or have enough to live on. The sunshine doesn't feed or clothe you!
I've listed a few things to consider, from our experience and that of our customers and hope part of it helps or provokes thought!
- please do come with enough money to live on for 6 months if you are coming to find work. There isn't a lot of work in the Peyia area - unless you wish to work in a bar, restaurant or shop: all of which is fine but many people are chasing the same work
- take our private healthcare before you come. The private hospitals here are excellent: you can be seen, operated on and home within 24 hours if you've the right cover
- be practical: don't buy until you've tried living here. There are many places to rent - nice places too!
- its cold at night in the winter and very wet for about 3 months, mainly at night, during the winter months. Choose a place to live which is well looked after - and buy a heater/ bring sweaters!
- learn to swim: a lot of life here is on the sea or in pools. Best to be careful and know how to swim: or at least start to learn when you live here
- be happy with each other/family. Many people come here to try to make relationships work: its a lonely place if you don't get on! The Cypriot way is very home based, not pub or club based - though there is a good ex pat network
- don't bring your car until you've tried living here. Worth renting for at least 1-2 months just to save the expense of the transport
- have a clear objective in mind: come for the quality of life, beauty of the island, simple way to live, cost effective lifestyle and wonderful people, not to make your fortune (though we've just struck gas, so if thats your industry, get here quick!!)
- ask around - but make your own mind up. Many of the expat forums are written by people who are deeply unhappy here and don't reflect the majority.....life is what you make it, here or anywhere in the world.
And finally, try it! The experience is wonderful!
