Shopping in Philippos Supermarket last night, I was stopped by an older local Cypriot man whose face I recognised but who I hadn't ever spoken to. For years, I've seen him sitting with other locals , outside of the kafenes, sipping coffee and watching the world go by.
Seems he's been watching Tony and I too: his approach was friendly but opened with: " How much Greek do you speak now?" I answered him in my best, though limited Greek and he replied that I should be more like his 86 year old mother and watch Greek TV to learn: apparently , she has taught herself English by watching English TV.
We didn't talk for long: the fact I wasn't fluent in his native tongue, didn't please him and he's given me a few weeks to "try harder". After that, he tells me, he'll check me again and, if I'm able to hold a conversation with him in Greek, he'll be happy!
"Megala adelphos" is watching me, it seems ! (Thats mispelt "big brother" to you and me).....
