Our lovely friend Jean is home alone at the moment coz AJ is in hospital in Paphos, being well looked after but leaving his lovely wife to look after herself. Originally from South Africa, Jean was telling me horror stories on Friday evening, about the many, many breakins, some violent, which were happening in the town where she used to live.
Later that evening, just before midnight, Jean rang us and was in a terrible state: two masked men had tried to get into her home here in Peyia and she thought they were trying to kick her door in. She rang the police and Tony and I raced to her rescue
On the way down the hill, Tony remembered it was "Carnival" and the local children were all dressed up in masks and costumes - and up to mischief!
It transpired that it was two such children who knocked on Jeans door, giving her a terrible fright then compounding everything by throwing fresh eggs at the door when Jean wouldn't let them in.
Poor thing was terrified but at least it was, simply, mischief.
The fear from the past overshadowed the evening - but a good couple of large brandies and a bit of a giggle and we all felt better. I was shocked to think that Peyia could be becoming a bad place to live - and relieved to realise the truth when it came out!
Carnival happens only once per year, thankfully - and Jean will be more than ready for the visitors this time next year!
