Peyia Cyprus

A sad day for Peyia

Lynn - 17/07/2010

Since the conflict on Cyprus in 1974 , when the North and South of the island divided and the north became under Turkish jurisdiction, there have been approx 2000 missing Cypriot men, lost to the fighting.

Families on Cyprus have been told that nothing is known about these soldiers; statues and monuments were built to commemorate these brave men and across the island, trees are dressed with white handkerchiefs, noting the fact that the men are lost without trace.

Today, Peyia village paid tribute to one of these men, a local from Peyia, whose remains were found buried in an unmarked grave in the north, in the past few months. Identified by DNA tests, today, the family of this poor soul, laid him to rest with a very special and moving service in the village church in Peyia. Soldiers stood guard around the centre of the village and the Church and traffic stopped as people paid tribute to this man and his comrades - and gave support to his family.....

After a very long wait, he can be at rest now. Lets pray the others also get that chance too.
