Tree trimming time in Peyia

Lynn - 16/06/2010

As I drove through the centre of Peyia village yesterday, I swear to you the huge palm trees which line the gardens near the church and the roadways outside the tavernas and cafes, were shrinking in embarrassment at having had their magnificent leaves cut off!

Without exception, each of these tall and strong living "beings", looked the other way as people drove past or looked at their "nakedness" in the harshness of bright sunlight. Their leaf clothing laid at their feet, these poor trees looked sad and scalped- like a child coming from the barbers for the first time and realising his ears have grown too big for his head!

The tree fellers who were attending them, (actually there were at least 10 of them), didn't seem to care and cut away with gusto. I felt quite sad for the palm trees - but was amazed at how tall they each were and how much their foliage had obscured the views from the centre of the village

Sadly, they've now revealed more of the awful clock which is still standing proudly in the square but now at least has batteries and is keeping some sort of time!
