Easter Saturday in Peyia

Lynn - 03/04/2010

I've just been to Phillipos Supermarket to get the welcome packs for the lucky people I'm checking into Villa Caliteri in Peyia and Villa Melanie, in Coral Bay.
I had to laugh: the car park at the supermarket, which actually belongs to the Church and 4 shops AND the muncipality, is filled with wood. As I was leaving , the local boys were coming in convoy up the hill in their trucks, with even more wood to add to this potential Peyia fire hazard.
Tourists are standing around looking fascinated at the happenings. Locals are keeping out of the way, We know that, at 8pm tonight, "Juddas" will be burned again outside the church , before the celebration of Easter begins. Known as the "lamprtzia" (the burning of "Kouzalos), its an honour for all of the young men to join in and bring their wood to help rid the festivities of the spirit of Juddas.

The fire will last long into the night - as will the parties. Fireworks go off at midnight, and will stretch from Paphos to Sea Caves. Peyia always has the best - if we don't burn down before the clock strikes 12! Thats a very serious pile of wood in Phillipos car park!
