Bus stop? I dont think so!

Lynn - 20/03/2010

I've just finished my weekly class where I am attempting to learn this beautiful language - Greek, the Cypriot way. I've had to laugh today: we were running through a dialogue where we were on a bus, had to buy a ticket then learn relevant phrases to bus travel....all good fun

Reminded me that a couple of years ago, my Dad and Mary were here for the 2nd year running. My Dad, a highly intelligent man, believed he'd cracked Greek during his first visit so, when in Paphos with Mary and wanting to get back to Peyia, he stopped a few of the passersby, to ask them , "Where do I find the nearest Keo please?". Some of those asked, just laughed at the old man wanting Keo so early; others were angry. My Dad couldn't understand till he went into a cafe, asked again and was given a pint! Dad protested, explained that he wanted a "Keo" which he believed was the word for "bus stop" - and the cafe owner laughed.

With Keo sponsoring most of the bus stops from Peyia to Paphos, Dad believed that what the bus stops were called.

Easy mistake? Well, a very funny one!
