Happy Socks!

Lynn - 09/02/2010

Today was always going to be a tough day. Without going into detail, as a non Cypriot (by birth) Cypriot company, we attract a lot of hassle from some Cypriots who feel we shouldn't be here....
Sadly for them, as they sit over their whisky, complaining about expats stealing their business, smoking their cigars and generally putting the world to rights, we are doing business. A lot of it, renting villas in Peyia on both holiday and longterm basis.

Don't get me wrong. Most of the locals are fantastic. Its just like any village in the world: when incomers arrive, they have to know the rules - and if the village is growing and thats down to the incomers, there are a few ripples in the pond before things settle down.

I decided to wear my "happy socks" today under my "don't mess with me" business suit. We had a tough meeting first thing and the repercussions of it were going to send out a few ripples to I needed to look the part but remember that nothing is that serious - and lilac, yellow and pink spotty socks are just the trick for not taking things seriously. Course, if I'd had an accident and had to reveal said socks, my street cred would have been ruined.

I'd have pleaded to be "in training to be a real Cypriot" ie aspiring to wear pop sox, which are BIG here. That, they would have believed and that would have guaranteed my acceptance as truly local!
